A mapping Portal for Kilimani
A joint mapping exercise conducted along Kirichwa Kubwa River from Arboretum (Downstream) to Riruta (Upstream) in order to map the various features affecting the natural flow of the river so as to assess the environmental status and potential for restoration of the river.

Sewer
These sewer networks are much shallower and more flexible than traditional sewer systems and can form part of the solution to sanitation challenges faced by low-income urban communities in Nairobi.
Encrotchment
Riparian land is important when rain increases because it acts like a ‘filter’, reducing the amount of nutrients and suspended sediments carried in run-off destined for the stream. Additionally, riparian zones can minimize flood peaks following heavy rainfall.
Garbage
Proper disposal of waste is important when protecting the health of water because it can prevent pollution of water sources and minimize the possibility of spreading disease. Without proper sanitation facilities, waste from infected individuals can contaminate a community’s land and water, increasing the risk of infection for other individuals.
Planned Development
Planned development is crucial for achieving smart and sustainable cities. If well-planned and managed, urban development can be sustainable and can generate inclusive prosperity. A smart sustainable city is innovative and uses ICTs to improve people’s quality of life, make urban operations and services more efficient, and boost its competitiveness while ensuring that it meets the economic, social, environmental, and cultural needs of present and future generations.

Arboretum to Likoni Rd
This section had large riparian zones with little building
encroachment. The river was generally clean and had abundant vegetation. In addition
to soil erosion and occasional obstructions by fallen trees or debris, the main challenges
are garbage and debris coming from upstream. Also, newer residential & commercial
developments are pressuring to slowly encroach on riparian land.
Likoni Rd to Naivasha Rd
This section has a much smaller riparian reserve. It’s unclear
how much this is due to zoning vs encroachment. However, it is clear that a number of
properties have encroached with even a few properties completely blocking passage
and tunneling the river to provide private parking lot the river. Some properties were
directly dumping into the river. There was a medium level of garbage and pollution
along this section. The main challenges were building encroachment and pollution
points.
Garbage Management
Garbage management is crucial when it comes to protecting our rivers. When garbage is not properly managed, it can end up in rivers and other waterways, polluting them and harming aquatic life. For example, heavy rainfall can cause overloading of the sewer network, leading to surface water flooding and overflow at urban waste water treatment plants, with untreated sewage flowing into rivers, lakes or coastal areas.
Unplanned Development
Garbage management is crucial when it comes to protecting our rivers. When garbage is not properly managed, it can end up in rivers and other waterways, polluting them and harming aquatic life. For example, heavy rainfall can cause overloading of the sewer network, leading to surface water flooding and overflow at urban waste water treatment plants, with untreated sewage flowing into rivers, lakes or coastal areas.
Sewer Issue
Sewer burst have become a norm within Kilimani area possing a negative effect to the aquatic and river dure surface runoff mixed with sewer draining to kilimani
There have been concerns raised by residents of Kilimani estate about water shortage and a possible sewage crisis in the area. The residents have called upon Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to intervene. They have raised an alarm about the influx of high-rise buildings and population in the area, which has outstretched amenities including water supply systems and sewer lines from the residential units.
